Cons

Like other foam mattresses, you may notice the Purple has a bit of a smell when it’s delivered. While it’s 100% green and this smell is not toxic and won’t harm you or your pets or children, it still can be annoying. Give it several days to a week to disappear. It should be noted that in user reviews, many people say they notice no smell at all.

The only other complaint about the Purple is that at 115 pounds, it might be a bit heavy to set up by yourself. When it’s delivered, it comes in a big roll. Having a second person on hand to get it where it needs to go is a good idea.

Does it work with box spring?

You can use the Purple mattress on either a slat or platform bed or put it directly onto a box spring or right on the floor.

Is it toxic?

This mattress prides itself on being allergen-resistant and also non-toxic. It’s made of a hyperelastic polymer that is recycled and made from food-grade ingredients. Like the Casper, it’s also CertiPUR certified, meaning it is low VOC and doesn’t include any toxic chemicals.

What about motion transfer?

It turns out the Purple is really comfortable with two people sleeping on it, and movement by the other person is virtually undetectable. As far as other nighttime activities, it’s also rated best for sex because of its responsiveness, bounce, no noise, edge support, comfort and durability.

Is it good for lighter people?

Most newer foam-type mattresses are really comfortable, but that’s based on average. This means if you’re a smaller person, you may find them way too firm to sleep on. However, in reviews from users around 125 pounds and under say it has incredible give and softness for them while being just firm enough. They say it’s a nice middle ground.

Do you sleep in a hole?

Some foam mattresses, particular the memory foam type, make a crater where you sleep. It’s hard to get up or turn over because it feels like the mattress has sucked you in. Because of the type of foam used in the Purple mattress, this doesn’t happen. Your body will make a slight impression, but it’s still easy to move around.

Do I flip it?

Unlike spring mattresses, this one doesn’t need to be flipped. In fact, flipping is definitely not recommended because the Purple cushion is only on one side (the top).

How does it feel?

The Purple mattress is a very unique mattress. It gets its unique feel from the hyper elastic polymer that is the top layer of the mattress. This polymer layer creates a level of cooling, response, and bounce that foam is not able to replicate. As a result, this mattress has a really different feel. This alone makes the trial period a crucial feature. Many of the reviews suggest that it takes a few nights sleep to get used to the feel of this mattress.

What are the layers?

Purple is constructed from 3 different layers. The top layer is a 2″ layer of hyperelastic polymer. This layer creates much of the cooling, comfort and feel ofthe mattress. The core of the mattress is a 3.5″ layer of poly-foam, creating much of the support. Finally, the base of the mattress is a 4″ layer of support foam. The Purple has a medium feel on the firmness scale.

What about the cover?

The cover is a blend of polyester, lycra and viscose. It’s a breathable and soft material that is pretty thin to allow airflow into the mattress. Lycra is a stretchy material, often found in athletic clothing, and helps with temperature regulation by wicking moisture away from the body. While it sticks to a traditional all-white color scheme, the diamond design adds eye appeal and the fabric is a good pair for the hyper-elastic polymer.

What is the cushion?

The top cushion of the Purple is called the comfort layer. It’s made of the hyper-elastic polymer described earlier in the review. This layer of the mattress is 2 inches tall and responds quickly to pressure, giving the mattress some bounce, which will allow you to change positions on the mattress without interference.

The layer is set up in a grid structure to help with weight distribution and pressure relief. The grid structure creates columns of polymer that are supportive until a certain threshold of pressure is reached. Once that threshold is reached, the column releases to allow that area to sink in, providing pressure relief. The weight is then distributed across the grid meaning the hyper-elastic polymer is able to give where there is increased pressure, while still being supportive overall to avoid the formation of pressure points. This formation also creates air pockets in the comfort layer of the mattress to help defend against overheating while sleeping.

What about the inside?

The middle layer of the Purple is called the transition layer and is 3.25 inches of poly foam with a 1.8 pound density and acts to provide some compression support for the mattress. This layer is also meant to transition the sleeper from the comfort layer on top to the base of the mattress.

The base layer of the mattress is 4 inches of poly foam with a 2 pound density. This firm layer acts as the foundational support of the mattress and gives the structure its shape.

Is it good for tummy sleepers?

In hundreds of user reviews, the Purple is said to be fantastic for side sleepers, stomach sleepers and back sleepers. No matter your position, it does a great job at relieving the pressure you can also feel at your joints or in your back or hips.

What sheets to use?

Since this mattress is only 9.5” deep, if you have deep-pocket sheets from your old bed, you’ll find they’re loose on this one. However, most regular-depth bed sheets will fit it just fine.

Will it work with adjustable?

You can use the Purple with an adjustable bed base. In fact, the manufacturer sells one as well, or you can use your own.

What about Sciatica?

We were surprised to see user reviews from people who suffer from sciatica. Who thought a bed could make that pain go away? One man says he could barely get out of his old bed in the morning, but now his back feels 100% better. He thought he’d have to have surgery, but he’s had the Purple for six months and feels great when he wakes up in the morning.

Does it get hot?

This is one of the many reasons we made Purple the #1 best mattress in our top 10 list. It doesn’t get hot at all. Many foam mattresses hold heat, but this one does not.

Is it good for larger people?

Unlike other foam mattresses, the Purple seems to be really comfortable for people of all body types and weights. Reviewers from 110 – over 300 pounds report it’s really comfortable for them. It really adjusts to every type of sleeper.

Can I clean it?

If by some chance you spill something on it, make sure to soak up as much of the liquid as you can right away. If you have a stain, cleaning it sooner than later will stop it from setting in. To clean any stain, you can use any mild upholstery cleaner. If the stain is oil-based, use an enzyme cleaner like Simple Solution.

While the Purple does come with a cover that unzips, it’s not recommended to put it in the washing machine. This is due to the amount of spandex in the cover and if you wash and dry it, it may shrink. Even if it doesn’t shrink, it may lose the plush feeling it had before. However, you can take off the cover and air it out. If you’d like, you can spray it with something like Febreeze. Just make sure it’s completely dry before putting it back on.

Overall Impressions

After all this info and research, we’ve definitively elected the Purple our top pick of our top 10 best mattresses available on the market today. It’s great for sleeping in any position and is the only one we’ve found that adjusts itself no matter your body weight.

The design of the Purple does a great job to provide just enough firmness while being soft enough to relieve pressure while it keeps your back in a comfortable position. It also sleeps cool and doesn’t transfer motion between you and your partner.

Overall, Purple is pretty amazing. While it does have a higher price tag, it also has the comfort you need to get a good night’s rest every night for a long time. That combined with its allergy resistance and non-toxic construction make it our top favorite.

Cons

Just like the other foam mattresses on the market today, you’ll likely detect a smell when first unboxing this one. It will take about a week for it to air out. The only way to avoid this is to buy a different type of mattress like those old-fashioned kinds with springs, but they’re not nearly as comfortable.

Is it good for arthritis?

Some people considering buying a Casper mattress have painful conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis or fibromyalgia and are wondering if it will help relieve some of the discomfort while sleeping. This seems to be the case in user reviews.

In fact, one review from a woman who is 59 and used to wake up with joint stiffness and pain every day says her issues disappeared after the first night sleeping on the Casper.

Another user had terrible shoulder pain and had been in physical therapy for months. He says for the first time his pain is gone and he’s sleeping soundly through the night.

Is it hot to sleep on?

The Casper does a good job of regulating temperature and keeping it neutral. The top layer is latex foam which helps a lot to keep the air flow moving. Many users say it holds heat less than a regular memory foam mattress.

Do I need a box spring?

You can actually use this mattress on many different types of platforms. You can use it on a solid base, a platform bed, an adjustable base frame or a box spring.

How firm is it?

How firm the Casper will feel mostly depends on your body weight. It’s optimized for people of “normal” sized weights, so between 140-200 pounds roughly. If you’re smaller, it’s going to feel more firm to you. Conversely, people who are much heavier are going to think it’s a bit soft. For this reason, it’s a great mattress for those in that weight range but might not feel quite right if you’re really small or large.

Do I flip it?

With traditional spring mattresses, it was always recommended to flip and rotate them on a regular basis so they would wear evenly. That’s not necessary with the Casper mattress. You can rotate it if the sleepers are very uneven in weight so it wears evenly, but you won’t want to flip it. The top layer is perforated latex foam and breathes really well, so you’ll want to keep it on top.

What is the edge like?

The edge of this mattress isn’t so soft that you’ll slide off when sitting on it. They do, however, slouch a bit. Some users are bothered by this, but most say it’s so comfortable to sleep on it doesn’t matter because how often do you sit on the edge of the bed for a while?

How big is the box?

The Casper ships in a box that is very compact considering the size of the mattress itself. The measurements are 20” wide x 21” long x 41” high.

What sleep positions are best?

While the Tuft & Needle is especially good for stomach sleepers, this one is great for side sleepers and stomach sleepers. Side sleepers in their reviews say they have no trouble with pressure point pain such as the delicate spots at your hips and shoulders. It’s also easy to flip from side to side as the foam has enough give to not suck you into it so you feel like you’re trapped.

For stomach sleepers, reviews from men and women from about 170-275 pounds say they sleep comfortably on their stomachs on this model and find it extremely comfortable.

What’s in it?

Starting with a synthetic latex foam top, its aim is to keep sleepers cool and add bounce. Second is a memory foam layer to relieve pressure and contour to your body. Following that layer is proprietary foam that adds support and absorbs weight. Finally, the last layer is dense support foam to increase durability and distribute weight.

Covering all four layers is a standard single piece of 100% polyester that is soft, thin, and fairly stretchy. The cover’s dark side panels are made of 51% polyester and 49% polypropylene.

Is it environmentally friendly?

Casper doesn’t use any flame-retardant chemicals in their products, so you don’t have to worry about those. Instead, there is a silica sock just under the cover that will melt in on itself and suffocate the oxygen needed for any fire to burn.

For other harmful chemicals or emissions, a water-based adhesive is used and they don’t contain formaldehyde. In fact, this mattress is CertiPUR certified, which means there’s no formaldehyde, mercury, ozone depleters, lead or other heavy metals. The foam is also low VOC for good air quality, and the mattress is vegan.

Does cold affect it?

With traditional memory foam mattresses, they can get stiff when the temperature is cold. That doesn’t happen with this one. Some users state they leave their home temperature set as low as 64F degrees, and there is no change in the firmness of the Casper.

Overall Impressions

Whether you’re a stomach, back or side sleeper, the Casper is a very comfortable mattress. That said, it’s most comfortable for people who weigh more than 140 pounds or so. If you’re smaller, it’s probably going to feel hard to you.

The Casper is great not only for those with back pain but also people with more serious conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and fibromyalgia. Even if you have no health problems whatsoever, it seems like you’ll get a fantastic night’s rest on this mattress.

Best for: Back Sleepers, Side Sleepers & Stomach Sleepers

Cons

Like most foam beds, this one can feel a little bit firm at first. However, once you get used to it (takes about a week), it’s extremely comfortable to sleep on.

How is it different than others?

Many people searching for that perfect mattress want to know how Snuggle Pedic compares to others like Tuft and Needle, Purple and Casper. One of the differences in one vs the other is that every Snuggle Pedic mattress is manufactured right in the USA at their Southern California manufacturing plant.

Snuggle Pedic also claims their patented air flow system sets them apart. This Airflow Transfer system has thousands of tiny holes that connect to channels underneath, so it reduces the buildup of body heat.

Is a box spring needed?

Not at all, but you can use one. Many sleepers use their Snuggle Pedic on a platform bed or on a box spring if they already have one in place. If you use a platform, just be sure the slats are not more than four inches apart from maximum support.

You can even use it on a Murphy Bed if it allows for a 10” thick mattress. It also works well on adjustable bed bases.

What’s the weight capacity?

While the company doesn’t directly designate a specific weight capacity for this particular product, we did find several user reviews commenting on how comfortable this is for a wide range of weights and heights. One woman comments that she’s 5’9” and 170 pounds, her husband is 6’2” and 240 pounds, and they sleep very comfortably on this bed with their 50 pound Husky dog.

Will the edges break down?

The edges of this mattress are firm and will not break down with extensive sitting. The edges do have some give for comfort.

How dense is the foam?

The foam used has a 3 pound density. The channeled base layer is comprised of 1.8 pound density polyurethane.

The difference in foam density is directly related to comfort. A low-density memory foam of 3 pounds per cubic foot or less feels softer. You’ll sink into it more quickly when you lie down.

Medium density is considered 4-5 pounds per cubic foot. These mattresses are comfortable while providing more support.

High density foam is anything 6 pounds or higher, and these have very firm support and are quite durable.

Is it easy to get up?

Unlike some memory foam mattresses, this one has just enough give but is still easy to get up from. Its shape quickly comes back once your body weight is gone.

Does it have latex?

This one is made of high grade polyurethane foam. The base layer might feel like springy latex, but there is no latex at all in it.

Is the cover washable?

Yes. It comes with a bamboo cover that zips on and off. You can machine wash it using the gentle cycle and a mild detergent. The manufacturer further recommends separating the top from the sides and bottom and only washing the top as needed.

Can I flip it?

Like most foam models, this one isn’t meant to be flipped because the top two layers are specifically made for air flow against your body. No need to worry about flipping it anyway because if it sags more than 0.75” anytime within 20 years, it’s covered under the warranty.

Is it fire retardant?

Oftentimes mattresses contain harmful chemicals to make them resistant to fire and flames. Snuggle Pedic is proud that their models contain none of those. Instead, they use an ecological and safe glass filament fire stocking which covers the foam and provides fire protection. No dangerous chemicals are used.

Are electric blankets okay?

Yes – this can be used with any good functioning electric blanket, and it won’t harm the foam or cover.

Overall Impressions

The Snuggle Pedic is another great option and definitely deserves a spot in our Top 10 list. User reviews report extreme comfort, and even better – the company will make customizations for you if the mattress is too firm.

Overall, it’s a great value for the money, and you really can’t beat a 90-night sleep trial combined with a 20-year warranty.

Best for: Back Sleepers & Stomach Sleepers

Cons

The biggest complaint we’ve found in user reviews of the Tuft N Needle mattress is that it does have a smell from the foam. No worries though: It airs itself out after about a week. This happens with just about every foam mattress on the market today, so it’s a pretty typical problem.

For this reason, we recommend not sleeping on it for the first few days at least until it airs out completely.

What is it made of?

The Tuft & Needle mattresses are all made from high density polyurethane foam. The cover is a rayon/polyester blend. It’s essentially a dual-core memory foam mattress with a fabric cover.

Is it good for larger people?

If you’re a big guy or gal, sometimes mattresses can be uncomfortable and just don’t hold up. Sometimes pressure points like those on your hip and shoulder can prevent you from sleeping. This doesn’t seem to be a big problem with the Tuft & Needle mattress.

In one review from a man who is 6’4” and 280 pounds, he said he felt better after sleeping on this mattress than any other. He noted that the big pressure points he usually feels didn’t bother him. However, if doing anything other than sleeping, like watching TV, reading, meditating, etc., it might be a good idea to get a plush topper if you feel any discomfort. That will take care of any minor sore points on your body.

According to the company’s website, this mattress will hold up to 500 pounds per person, so 1,000 pounds for a queen size.

Is it good for stomach sleepers?

Yes – As a matter of fact in review after review from those who sleep on their front, they say their back doesn’t hurt anymore after using this mattress. One buyer said it took her 2-3 weeks to get used to it, but after that she slept great.

Can I sit for a long time?

Some people shopping for a Tuft and Needle memory foam mattress wonder if it will keep a permanent indent if they do a lot of sitting on it reading, working on a laptop, etc.

The fact is sitting for long periods on this model won’t hurt it at all. The foam this mattress is made of is comfortable and soft, but it’s also firm enough to spring back quickly. That’s nice when you’re sleeping as well, as the mattress won’t “suck you in” so you feel like you can’t get out of the indent.

One reviewer even says she sits on it all the time with her two 60-pound dogs, and it’s in just as great shape as it was the day she bought it.

Does it need a box spring?

If you have a platform or slat bed, you won’t need a box spring with this product – it can go right on the frame. If you have a traditional bed frame with only a couple of cross braces, you’re better off using a box spring.

Tuft and Needle vs Tempurpedic?

Many people switch over to this mattress from a tempurpedic model. It’s really a good comparison. One user says he had the Tempur Cloud mattress with a cooling layer of gel. He used it for only two months before returning it because it was too hot. He then tried the Tuft & Needle because of the 100 night trial period. He says this one is far superior and costs a lot less too.

The big difference between the two is how they react with your body. Tempurpedic mattresses and other memory foam-type models slowly melt around your body as you lie down. When you move, it takes time for that surface to spring back.

This one is much more responsive. When you lie down and move around, the fibers move with you. User reviews say it is comfortable like memory foam without the memory. They also say it offers more support and is more comfortable on the back.

Is it soft or firm?

Its firm, but it’s not rock hard. It feels soft when you sit down on it, but when you lie down you get a lot of support. Most users report that it’s firm enough for people with a bad back but doesn’t dig in to delicate pressure points like the ones at the hip and shoulder.

Can I get a refund?

If for any reason you don’t like this mattress, you can return it within 100 days of purchasing it.

Is it hot?

This is a great question, as foam mattresses are known for sleeping hot and holding in body heat. In review after review users who’ve had this mattress for a while say it sleeps a lot cooler than a traditional spring mattress.

The reason for this lies in the foam construction. First, the foam has open cells, leaving more room for air flow. Second, the cells are oversized. Third, a minimal amount of glue is used between the layers. Fourth, only two layers of foam are used. The more layers included, the more glue is needed. Fifth, there is a combination of graphite and gel mixed in with the foam, and they really help with heat transfer.

Can I use it with an adjustable bed?

Yes, you can. In fact, the 10” model works particularly well with an adjustable bed base.

Does it have harmful chemicals?

These beds are BPA free, and they don’t contain any boric acid. The cover is a cotton-bamboo blend quilted with rayon, which is inherently inflammable. The rayon is blended with a small amount of polyester and sand.

How long will it last?

According to Consumer Reports magazine, this mattress is highly rated or durability. In fact, they recommend it as a best buy.

What kind of sheets to use?

Unlike some of the newer thinner mattresses, this one can be used with regular-sized sheets just fine. If you get a queen, use queen sheets and so forth. They won’t be quite as tight as they are on a regular spring mattress, but they work just fine with no slipping off.

Can I use a heating pad?

You can use a heating pad or electric blanket with this model without doing any damage at all.

Is it good for fibromyalgia?

People with disorders such as fibromyalgia, arthritis or other pain issues oftentimes have a really hard time finding a comfortable place to sleep. Users who have these conditions say this mattress has helped them tremendously. One user in her review said she was really skeptical at first but after giving it a try, she found out it was the best thing she ever bought.

Is it available in 5”?

Tuft & Needle used to make a 5” thick version of this mattress, but it’s been discontinued. They found this 10” model was much more popular, so they moved forward focusing only on it.

How firm is the edge?

Unlike some foam mattresses, this one is firm enough to sit on the edge to put on your shoes or for any other reason. You’ll find you sink down a little but no more than on a traditional inner spring model.

Does it trap moisture?

As long as you have this product up on a slatted bed frame or on a box spring, there is no problem with it attracting and holding moisture. If you have it on a floor where it’s damp, like any mattress, it may hold it in. It’s best to keep it up off the floor for good air flow.

How does it handle weight distribution?

If you’re large and your spouse is small or vice versa and you’ve been sleeping on a spring mattress, chances are one of you has been sleeping on an incline due to the weight distribution. This doesn’t seem to be a problem here. As long as it has a solid base like a good slat frame or box spring, there is very little flex. One reviewer who is 200 pounds with a 110 pound wife says his wife doesn’t feel very much movement at all when he gets up to go to work early in the morning.

Can you fold it for storage?

This isn’t a portable bed, so it’s not meant to be folded and stored away like a futon. Once in place, you’re better off leaving it there. You can probably roll it if you’d like to give it a try, but it will probably be a chore getting it to stay put rolled up.

Overall Impressions

Overall, the Tuft & Needle mattress is an excellent buy. Not only is it rated a best buy by Consumer Reports magazine, but reviews also agree. In over 11,000 reviews, this one gets nearly 5 stars. That says a lot!

It’s comfortable, firm enough but not too firm, and it’s great for all sleeping positions and handles weight distribution effortlessly. If you’re looking for a good comfortable mattress that will last a good long time, this is a great one to try, and thanks to their 100-day risk free trial, you can.

Best for: Stomach Sleepers

Cons

The biggest downfall of this mattress is that it contains chemical flame retardants. Most of the others on our top ten list are made of naturally flame-retardant materials, so that’s not an issue. Most users won’t mind this, but if you’re really sensitive to chemicals, this is something to consider.

Is it flame retardant?

Since the Best 2 Rest is made from natural rubber, it is naturally flame retardant. However, that’s only part of the mattress (the top). The rest of it is treated with chemicals to be flame retardant, so if you are very chemically sensitive, it would be better to choose a different product.

How is it packaged?

The Best 2 Rest is rolled up tight in a box. It’s best to set it up and then wait for 48 hours for it to resume its full shape according to the manufacturer. Many users in their reviews say you don’t need to wait nearly that long.

Where is it made?

This mattress is made by Fortnight Bedding located in South Hackensack, New Jersey where they have a large manufacturing plant.

Is the cover washable?

The cover of this mattress cannot be removed, so you’ll need to spot clean it only. It is made from organic cotton.

Is it Dunlop or Talalay?

These may seem like gibberish terms, but they are actually two different processes of making latex foam. This one is made using the Dunlop process.

The Dunlop process is the more energy efficient vs the Talalay process. When the latex is in liquid form, it’s foamed and poured into the mold. Then, the mold is closed and put into a vulcanization oven. After the oven, it’s removed from the mold and then thoroughly washed to remove any excess materials. The washing lets the foam retain its elasticity and counters any problems you might get with aging. After it’s washed, it’s dried at a high temperature to ensure its thoroughly dried.

Does temperature affect it?

No – hot or cold environments won’t harm this mattress.

Is it soft or firm?

This one is definitely on the softer side. It’s not nearly as soft as one with a plush topper, but it’s much softer than an inner spring mattress.

Does it smell?

Since the foam is underneath the natural latex layer, users in their reviews claim there is no discernable smell at all.

How much support does it need?

You can have this model on a box spring or adjustable frame bed, but if you have it on a platform bed where the slats are more than 2” apart, it’s best to support it with a piece of plywood to create a more firm surface.

Do you sink in?

You won’t sink in as much as on most memory foam mattresses. The natural latex layer definitely makes it more bouncy.

Overall Impressions

The Best 2 Rest gets a 4.5/5 star rating in user reviews across the board, so it really is a good product. It’s comfortable and seems to wear well over time. However, we don’t like that it has chemical flame retardants, as those chemicals can bother some people. If that doesn’t bother you, this one is a great value. If it does, take a look higher on the list at some of the other highly rated picks that are made from 100% natural fibers without any chemicals at all.

Cons

The only down side is the same as every other memory foam mattress – they gas off. Over time the smell will dissipate, usually within a few days.

Is it good for large people?

From user reviews from those who sleep on this mattress nightly and weigh over 300 pounds, it’s said to be very comfortable. They say the firmness really helped their aches and pains go away.

How is it shipped?

All sizes are shipped in compressed in a box. The queen size (rolled up) ships in a 20.4” x 20.4” x 33.4” box. It’s small enough to fit in the back seat of a car. Because of its size, it’s easy to carry, get in place and set up.

Where is it made?

The Sweetnight mattresses are all made in China. However, that doesn’t mean its of poor quality. In fact, it is the top business mattress in China, and it won the Best Support Brand in 2017.

Is a box spring okay?

You can put the Sweetnight on top of a box spring, slatted frame or adjustable bed frame. You can even sleep on it directly on the floor with no base at all.

How firm is it?

This mattress has two sides with different levels of firmness. One side is much softer, about a 2-3 out of 10 firmness. The flip side is about a 7 out of 10.

Does it smell?

No, it doesn’t. This mattress is certified by CertiPUR-US for quality, environmental stewardship and safety. Initially like all foam mattresses, there is a slight odor, but it is completely gone within about 24 hours. The odor is not chemical and is not harmful at all.

Can I wash the cover?

The cover that comes with is a blend of premium cotton and knit. It zips off for cleaning. You can even put it in the washing machine.

Can I flip it?

You can both rotate and flip this mattress. If you flip it, just be aware that one side is firmer than the other. It is recommended to rotate it every few months so it doesn’t keep an indent from your body.

What is the foam density?

Layer 1: 110 pounds; 50 density

Layer 2: 55 pounds; 25 density

Layer 3: 66 pounds; 30 density

How do I get the warranty?

You can register for the warranty right on Sweetnight website.

Is it cool?

This mattress does tend to sleep cool because of the memory foam infused with gel. The gel regulates the temperature and distributes body heat. This combined with the breathable fabric cover makes it nice and cool.

How long can it stay in the box?

You can keep this mattress in the box until you set it up, but it is recommended to not leave it in the box for more than 6 months.

What is CertiPUR-US?

CertiPUR-US is a third party organization that does rigorous certification processes. It means the mattress foam is made without carcinogens, PBDEs, ozone depleters, heavy metals, formaldehyde and phthalates.

Overall Impressions

Because of its soft and hard sides, this mattress is much more versatile than most. It’s still made of memory foam, which tends to run hot, but it has gel infused, so that’s not a problem here. It’s also thicker so it’s easier to find sheets to fit. Overall it’s a good buy and definitely deserves a spot on our top ten list.

Best for: Back, Stomach & Side Sleepers

Cons

The big complaint here is that this one is really heavy to set up. It weighs 90 pounds and since its dense memory foam, it’s a real pain to get it out of the box. We highly recommend you don’t attempt to do it alone so you don’t hurt your back trying to lug it up onto your bed frame.

Can I use and adjustable bed frame?

Yes, you can use this one on an adjustable bed frame. However, users in their reviews have stated that it works best on an adjustable frame when you have either the foot or head raised individually but not elevated at the same time.

How soft is it?

The Classic Brands mattress is a medium-firm as far as comfort. It has springs so there is a lot of support. Combined with the softer memory foam, it has quite a bit of give.

What support does it need?

You can put this on a box spring or a platform bed, and there will be plenty of support for both the sleepers and the mattress. Just make sure you have some sort of support underneath it, even if that means leaving it on the floor.

Is it good for stomach sleepers?

Yes! According to review after review from stomach sleepers, they’re very comfortable on this one. It’s soft enough for comfort but not so soft that you sink into a hole.

How thick is it?

This one is much thicker than most of the others on our top ten list at 12” thick. Standard sheets will fit it perfectly.

Is it hypoallergenic?

It is. Memory foam is a natural antimicrobic, so this mattress is resistant to mold, dust mites and allergens without using any harsh chemicals.

What is it made of?

The first component is the innerspring layer. This is comprised of tempered coils made of steel that help this mattress retain its shape. These coils are individually fabric wrapped which minimizes friction and gives a huge amount of support. They also make motion transfer less when you’re sleeping with someone else. The coils move independently of each other so they contour to each person individually.

The second layer is latex foam. Latex is made from the sap of a tree called hevea brasiliensis, also known as the rubber tree. It’s really soft and elastic. Latex is designed to be breathable, and the cell structure is open for maximum air movement. It’s naturally hygienic and resistant to dust mites. It’s also naturally anti-microbial and anti-bacterial. In other words, icky stuff like fungus, mildew, mold and fungus won’t grow in it.

Latex is also resistant to impressions, so you won’t be sleeping in a hole because it bounces back. It’s known to not sag or keep the impression of your body, so you don’t need to flip it. It’s supposed to reduce the pressure points that can cause you pain and eliminate any turning and tossing.

The third layer is memory foam infused with gel. This creates a plush and cool sleeping surface. Because of the gel being more porous than regular memory foam, it’s more breathable and comfortable. One of the gel foam’s main jobs is to dissipate body heat to regulate your temperature as you sleep.

Lastly comes open-cell memory foam. The cells in this foam are interconnected, adding to its breathability and comfort. This layer also dissipates body heat for a more comfortable night’s rest.

How long to wait?

Like many mattresses that come rolled or compressed in a delivery box, it takes some time for it to fully expand. This one takes about 48 hours, but you can certainly sleep on it before then.

Is it hot?

Because of the gel and open cell memory foam, this one actually sleeps comfortably. It’s not nearly as hot as regular memory foam mattresses.

Good for heavy people?

Since this one is a hybrid which has springs plus the memory foam, it provides a great amount of support for heavier sleepers.

Is it squeaky?

If you’ve ever slept on a spring mattress, you know at times you can hear the springs squeaking against each other. In this one, each coil is individually wrapped. Since they never touch, there is no squeaking or noise.

How many coils?

The queen size version has 768 coils.

Does it smell?

Like with unpacking anything foam, there may be some odor for a time. This one seems to take about 72 hours for the smell to completely go away.

Overall Impressions

Overall, the Classic Brands mattress is a good one. If you like a thicker mattress or one that has more firmness, this one is a good choice. It has the springs for super support and the memory foam for soft comfort. In user reviews, we’ve found it to be a good mattress and best for both stomach and back sleepers.

Best for: Back & Side Sleepers

Cons

The only negative about this Zinus mattress isn’t a negative for everyone: It’s really firm. On a 1-10 scale where 10 is really soft and 1 is hard/firm, it rates about a 2. If you need a great support firm mattress, this one is a good choice. However, if you’re a stomach sleeper, a lightweight side sleeper or like a soft mattress, this is not the one for you.

Does it have springs?

Yes – It actually contains hundreds of pocketed springs (It has 936 12-gauge coils in the Queen size, 1224 in the King, 768 in the Full size and 576 in the Twin) that minimize the transfer of motion from your bed mate, and they also help to align your spine.

How firm is it?

Because of the coils, this mattress is very firm, making it ideal for back sleepers. People who sleep on it regularly say in their reviews how impressed they are that the firmness extends all the way to the edge, so it doesn’t smush down when sitting on it.

That said, it does have a nice soft top for comfort. One user who has two herniated discs says this is the most comfortable mattress she’s ever slept on. She also comments that she and her partner are over 250 pounds, and after a year, it has still held up.

On a scale of 1 – 10 where 10 is the most soft and plush and 1 is really firm, this one rates about a 2.

What is the weight limit?

The weight limit of the Zinus is up to 650 pounds.

Is it hot?

Since it contains no memory foam, the Zinus does not hold in heat.

Is a box spring required?

If you have a platform bed, you don’t need a box spring. However, the mattress does need some type of support underneath it for maximum comfort and wear. You can also use it on an adjustable base, but it’s recommended to use one with a lip on the edge to avoid the mattress slipping. You can even put this one directly on the floor. In other words, any firm, stable base will work just fine.

How is it shipped?

It comes compressed and rolled in a box. Since its heavy, it’s recommended to have two people to unbox and set it up.

Is there an odor?

None at all. Mostly, you’ll want to leave it up for a few hours so it can expand, but there is no smell.

Is a box spring needed?

Nope – You can use the Zinus on any platform bed, on a box spring or even lay it directly on the floor. However, the manufacturer recommends not using it on an adjustable bed base.

Is it good for larger sleepers?

Since this bed is on the firmer side, it’s great for sleepers of any weight or height. In user reviews, people from 140 – 350 pounds say it’s very comfortable with adequate support.

Is it quiet?

Overall, you won’t hear the springs squeaking. However, if you jump on it, it may make a little noise.

Are the edges soft?

The edges on the Zinus are actually quite firm, so it’s comfortable sitting on the edge of the bed without sinking down into it.

When can I sleep on it?

After the unboxing, the mattress will start to retain its original shape immediately. You can sleep on it right away. However, give it overnight to completely expand from the time it spent packed up.

What size is the box?

The Queen size is shipped in a 42.1” x 19.1” x 20.1” box.

Is a protector needed?

The Zinus mattress does not come with a cover, so it’s recommended that you purchase one if you’d like to protect your bed. This is especially true if the bed is for a child or you sweat when you sleep. In those cases, you can get a waterproof washable cover that you can put in the washing machine occasionally.

Is the 10” or 12” better?

This mattress actually comes in different thicknesses, and here we’re reviewing the 12” version. We recommend this one over the 10” thick one because in user reviews, it seems like the 10” is just a little too firm. Generally speaking, the thinner a spring mattress is, the firmer it will be as the coils don’t have nearly as much room to expand.

If you want a firmer mattress, then the 10” thick one is still a good option and may work best for you.

How does it last?

Users who have slept on this mattress for a few years say it’s just as firm as the day it was received and set up. This goes for both larger and smaller body-style sleepers. Their reviews are very positive when it comes to durability and how the Zinus holds up over time. They say there has been no collapsing of the springs or foam and no sagging – even at the edges.

Should I flip it?

Like most modern mattresses, the Zinus is intended for one side to be against your body, so it’s not recommended to flip it at all. That said, it is a good idea to rotate it occasionally for even wear over time.

Where is it made?

This model was designed in the USA, but the manufacturing is done in China. If you’re hesitating because it’s made in China, keep in mind that it is certified by CertiPUR US. This means it has low emissions for indoor air quality. It’s made without chlorofluorocarbons, mercury, formaldehyde, prohibited phthalates and PBDE flame retardants. All of these products are approved for performance, safety and durability.

Good for stomach sleepers?

If you tend to fall asleep on your stomach, this one may feel too firm for you. Since it’s pretty firm, it’s recommended higher for back and side sleepers. If you have a bad back and need a firm mattress for support, this one is a good choice.

Does it generate heat?

Not at all, or not any more or less than any other mattress with springs inside. Air travels up through the springs, and there’s no memory foam to stop it, so you’ll stay cool while you’re sleeping.

What is the warranty?

The Zinus comes with a 10 year limited warranty. It covers any manufacturing defects and also includes any indentations that happen over 1.5”, decompression issues or sagging, waves or bumps that form over time.

Is it bouncy?

Unlike foam or memory foam mattresses, those with coils will have some bounce. So, this one is bouncy.

Good for back pain?

While we can’t guarantee any of the models on our top ten best rated list will relieve, reduce or eliminate back pain, this one rates high in user reviews. One user says she had chronic pain in his lower back before using the Zinus. She’s 5’4” and 140 pounds. She said after sleeping on it one night, her pain was 50% improved and was completely gone after the second night.

Another user in his review says he has a lot less of a tendency to wake up with pain in his back than he did with his last mattress. It’s not going to cure a serious disc problem, but overall users who have experienced back pain sleeping on other mattresses like this one better and give it high marks.

What’s the weight limit?

The manufacturer recommends a weight limit on this one of no more than 550 pounds combined.

Is it memory foam?

Many people don’t like memory foam because it tends to run hot. The Zinus does not use memory foam in their design. Instead, they use a layer of comfort foam on the top followed by a high-density foam layer.

How much does it weigh?

The Queen size weighs 111 pounds, and it can be delivered to your front door. Since it’s on the heavy side, it’s recommended to have some help lifting (or dragging) the box into your bedroom and setting it up. After you open the box, the mattress is rolled and vacuum sealed. Carefully cut away the plastic and unroll it where you intend to sleep on it.

Is it good for back sleepers?

Yes! This Zinus is plenty firm for back sleepers. If you’re a side sleeper and like a firmer mattress, you’ll likely be happy with this one as well. Some side sleepers prefer the 10” model as it’s a little bit softer. Stomach sleepers do best with the 8” thick version as it is the softest of them all.

All three of these models contour to your body as you’re sleeping, but none of them are dense enough to trap you so it’s hard to get out of bed.

What is the coil gauge?

This mattress is manufactured using 12 gauge coils.

Overall Impressions

The Zinus mattress is different than most modern models because it incorporates pocketed springs along with foam. Since it’s a fairly firm mattress, we recommend it highly for back sleepers. Most side sleepers find it comfortable as well. If you’re stuck on the idea of a traditional inner-spring mattress for its support, the Zinus is a good one to try. In fact, it’s one of the highest rated and best selling mattresses with springs.

Best for: Back Sleepers

Cons

Some sleepers, especially lighter ones, say the Live and Sleep is too firm for them. This can be rectified by adding a memory foam gel topper, which makes it much more comfortable. It also seems to take a bit longer to get used to than some of the others on our “best of” list.

Is it good for bigger sleepers?

According to user reviews, this one does well with heavier people due to its firmness. In fact, the company stress tested the product at 750 pounds, and it passed. They do recommend you put it on a new foundation or box spring for maximum support. This is because if there is a bow or bend in your box spring or foundation, the same thing will happen to the Live & Sleep.

Is a box spring needed?

No – You can use this bed with any type of foundation including a platform, box spring, adjustable bed frame or even place it right on the floor.

Should it be flipped?

Since it’s not a traditional inner spring mattress, it doesn’t need to be flipped. In fact, you shouldn’t flip it because the top layer of foam is meant to rest right under your body, and there is none on the bottom.

Can I feel movement?

Like most foam and memory foam models, motion transfer here is a minimum. In fact, in user reviews, spouses say they can’t tell when their wife or husband moves around or gets up at night. One user says she set a large cup on the bed just to see what would happen, and it didn’t spill when she got into bed.

What kind of sheets?

Regular sheets should fit just fine, but just make sure you don’t get the ones with extra deep pockets. Those will be too deep and will bag around the edges.

What is it made of?

The Live and Sleep is made of durable 3 pound memory foam. They don’t use higher density foam because it’s not as breathable, so it might get hot.

How is it sent?

This model is sent in a vacuum sealed box about the size of a small refrigerator, so it’s about 40” x 18” x 18”. When you open it, it folds and expands. For this reason it’s best to open it right in the bedroom so it’ll be easier to get to where you’d like it to stay.

Does it get hot?

In review after review, users say this one doesn’t get hot like other memory foam mattresses. In fact, one man comments that he lives in the Florida Keys, and if it was going to sleep hot, that would be the place it would be the worst.

What about back pain?

Some users say this one is too firm to completely relieve back pain unless they put at least a 2” topper on it. Other users say that their back pain is better because of the firmness. Most say in their reviews that after an adjustment period of about a week or so, their back pain disappeared.

Does it smell?

If you’ve ever had a foam mattress, you know they tend to “gas off” after unpacking them. This can last as little as a few days or a week or more. Some users rate this one higher on that scale because they say it had little or no odor, and if it had any it was gone within a few days.

Is it hypoallergenic?

Yes! In fact, not only is it hypoallergenic. It’s also antimicrobial and mite resistant. If you do have really bad allergy problems, it’s a good idea to still use an allergy bed protector just as an added measure of comfort.

Can you make it smaller?

Some buyers who want to use this in their RV or camper have asked if it can be cut down. While the manufacturer doesn’t recommend doing so for obvious reasons like it voids the warranty and the cover won’t fit right, in theory it would be fairly easy to trim with an insulation knife or other sharp blade since its foam.

Does it need to sit?

After you unpackage the mattress, you can sleep on it within a few hours. However, know that it may take up to 24-72 hours, so a few days, for it to regain its original thickness and fully expand.

Good for back sleepers?

This one is great for back sleepers who like a firm bed. Many people who sleep on their side also like it, though it may be too firm for some.

Is it like a hotel mattress?

Actually, it’s much firmer than most newer hotel mattresses, which tend toward very soft. Some users in their reviews say they now experience back pain when sleeping on a hotel mattress after getting used the firmness of this one.

Will I sink in?

The Live & Sleep is designed for medium firmness, so it’s not so soft that you will sink into a hole while you sleep.

Can I store it?

While this mattress comes folded, it’s meant to be set up and left rather than transported around like a futon. If you’re looking for a portable bed for guests, etc., it’s better to get an air mattress that’s easier to move around.

Overall Impressions

For an economical option, the Live and Sleep is a good mattress. While it’s not quite as plush as the Purple or Casper, sleepers still give it very good reviews, making it one of the highest rated mattresses available on the market today.

If you have a bad back and need a firm mattress, this one may be just what you’ve been seeking. If you’re small and like something softer, it’s best to go with one of the above mentioned models or get a good plush topper for this one.

Overall, the Live and Sleep gets high marks for comfort, durability and ease of setup. An added bonus is that no toxic chemicals are used, so you know you’re sleeping safely.

Is it soft or firm?

Really, it’s both. It has a layer of individually coiled springs for support with thick memory foam on top, so it has the support you need but a plush top as well. One user who says in his review that he’s been sleeping on it for about 10 months claims it’s so much softer than his previous mattress and doesn’t transfer motion but still provides all the support he needs for a comfortable night’s sleep.

Does it make noise?

Because of the individual coils and memory foam, it’s not noisy or squeaky at all.

How big is the box?

The box it ships in is about 4’ x 2.5’ and weighs about 98 pounds. The mattress itself comes shrink wrapped in plastic, and it takes a day or two to completely retain its shape.

Is it comfortable?

The Modway is good for those who like a softer sleeping surface. It has some support but not nearly as much as a traditional version with just springs. It’s not hot to sleep on either, which a plus considering it does have memory foam.

One user in his review said he was surprised that it really does have that “hotel mattress” feel.

Is there a cover?

Yes – it comes with a machine-washable cover that zips on and off. While you can toss it in the washing machine, it’s best to air dry it just in case it might shrink in the dryer.

What is it made of?

The Modway is a hybrid mattress consisting of foam encased wide pocket coils that are 2.5” wide x 6.25” tall. Each pocket is surrounded by 3 layers of high density foam. The top is gel-infused memory foam to quickly dissipate body heat. This memory foam also minimizes motion disturbance from your partner.

All of the components are CertiPUR-US certified, which means there is no mercury or heavy metals, ozone depleters, formaldehyde, TCEP or TDCPP flame retardants or PBDEs. It’s also low-VOC.

Is a box spring needed?

You can use the Modway with a box spring, but you don’t need one. Platform beds work just fine as long as the slats are no more than 3” apart. The bottom is non-slip so it should stay put on a base.

What’s the weight limit?

The weight limit of this Modway is only 300 pounds. Most mattresses hold a combined weight of at least 500 pounds. This may not concern some people, but if you and your partner are larger, it’s good to know it may not provide the support you need.

Overall Impressions

While the Modway is a good budget-friendly mattress and the price is pretty incredible for a hybrid, making it a good buy, it doesn’t have a sleep trial. While the price may be worth this concession, we prefer mattresses that incorporate a sleep trial into the sales price so it can be returned if you don’t like it. That said, if you’re on a tight budget and just need a good night’s sleep, the Modway may be the perfect choice for you.

Best for: Back Sleepers

Cons

Unlike all the other mattresses on our list, users in their reviews do complain that this one sleeps hot. If you tend to get too warm while you sleep, the memory foam in this one may make you overheat. However, if this doesn’t bother you, it’s a good value.

Does it have chemicals?

The Signature Sleep is certified by CertiPUR-US, so it doesn’t have any Tris (TCEP or TDCPP) flame retardants, no PBDEs, mercury, heavy metals, lead or ozone depleters.

Where is it made?

This one is made in China, however it is CertiPUR-US certified.

What’s the ILD?

First, an ILD number is the impression load deflection. It essentially tells you how firm or soft the mattress is and how much support it has. The Signature Sleep has an ILD rating of 9. This means it’s firm but not rigid.

This one is comprised of a layer of knit 3.5”, 2.375 pound, 9 ILD memory foam, a 8.5”, 1.5 pound, 20 ILD regular foam and a layer of non-skid fabric.

How does it hold up?

People who have used the Signature Sleep say in their reviews that it has held up well. However, those who have had it 2 years or more say it does have more give in it that it did when they bought it.

Is there a cover?

No, it doesn’t come with a cover. If you’d like to protect your mattress from moisture, stains and dust, it’s best to purchase one that’s washable.

Are heavier people okay?

Of course there’s nothing wrong with heavy people! 🙂 That said, user reviews say it’s good for heavier sleepers. Reviews from those 300+ pounds say it’s good and firm but still molds to your body. In fact, one user said she had 5 people in the bed for movie night, and it was extremely comfortable.

Is there a smell?
What’s the warranty?

It has a 1-year limited warranty that covers sagging or indentations over 1.5” inches deep. Just know that this only applies if you have it on a solid foundation.

How firm is it?

It’s very firm but not like sleeping on concrete. If it’s too firm for you, it’s recommended to get a nice thick mattress pad to go along with it. However, if you’re going to that added expense, you may consider just investing in a softer one like some of the other best mattresses on our list.

Can I cut it?

Many people want to use a mattress in their camper, RV or on a bunk bed of an unusual size. You can cut this one with a sharp razor knife. Just know this will probably void the warranty.

Overall Impressions

While the Signature Sleep isn’t our top favorite model, if you’re on a tight budget, it’s good as a starter. It’s firm with a fairly plush top and should last you at least a couple of years. It seems to be comfortable in user reviews for both larger and smaller sleepers and kids and adults alike.

Final Points

If you’re shopping for one of the top rated best mattresses to buy, our hundreds of user reviews referenced above should be really helpful. For the money, you can see which ones might work best from you from the highest rated to lower rated. In any case, these mattresses are all good and rate very high in online mattress reviews.

Some of them have sleep trials, which we highly recommend if you’re not absolutely sure you’ll love it. We also love some of the warranties on these top ten (up to 20 years!). In any case, keep in mind the way you sleep, how heavy or light you are and of course your budget. These key factors should help you select the best mattress for you.
