While gas lawn mowers are in some cases being outsold by electric and cordless, battery operated mowers because they cost more to maintain and are sometimes harder to use, many diehards or people with a lot of tough grass to cut still appreciate them. When you compare some of these engines vs those cordless mowers powered by a battery or electric models, many of the gas versions can outperform the others if you have a really tough job to do. If you’ve got a tough or large yard to cut, here are the best models of 2017:

1. Husqvarna HU800AWDH

This bad boy has a powerful 190cc Honda GCV190 engine combined with 4×4 all wheel drive all wrapped in a solid steel 22” deck. It has options for side discharge, bagging and mulching grass and leaves and on top of that, it’s self-propelled. It has large 11” rear wheels and 8” front wheels, both with ball bearings for smooth and easy steering.

It maneuvers very easily over all types of grass (no matter how tall or thick) and has a variable drive feature that lets you set the pace by just squeezing the handlebar trigger.

2. Poulan Pro PR625Y22RHP 961420127

This best selling lawn mower is powered by a Briggs and Stratton 150cc 625Ex autochoke engine and also has a 22” deck. It offers nine height adjustments, and it also offers mulching capabilities as well as bagging and side discharge. No tools are needed to go between the three modes of operation.

It has sturdy 12” rear wheels and 8” front wheels. Unlike the Husqvarna, it has front wheel drive but also has a variable speed transmission. This makes it perform especially well on large or hilly yards or those with rough terrain.

3. Craftsman 37430

This Craftsman made into our top 5 list for a variety of reasons. At a lower price point than many of its competitors, it still offers a strong engine with lots of power. Like the Poulan Pro, it also features a Briggs and Stratton engine, but this one is a Silver Series 140cc 5 Torque. It has a 21” cutting path with 11” rear wheels and 7” front wheels, which make it easy to maneuver in spite of it not being self powered.

It also has the 3 in 1 system built in so you can bag your grass if you don’t want to leave the clippings lying on the lawn, side discharge if you just want to get the job done quickly and mulching if you want to leave the nutrients to go back into the soil.

It has six height positions with dual point deck adjusters and a light recoil starter that the manufacturer claims takes less effort to pull than many other gas mowers.

4. Husqvarna 7021P

The engine on this Husqvarna is made by Honda and offers 160cc’s of power. The engine model is GVC160 with 6.9 gross torque, and its ideal for those with smaller yards. It has a cutting path of 21” and also offers the 3 in 1 capabilities. The handle on this mower has a soft ergonomic grip and is adjustable for users of different heights, and it also folds down for easy storage. In user reviews, this feature gets high marks. It has large 12” rear wheels that make it a breeze to use on rough terrain.

5. Lawn Boy 10732

This Lawn Boy is a bit smaller than the others on our top 5 list, but users in their reviews still rate it very high. It has a Kohler XT6 149cc engine with 6.5 foot-pounds of gross torque. It offers rear wheel drive for good traction so it’s easier to control when you’re mowing on hilly or sloped terrain.

Additionally, the manufacturer offers what’s called a 3-year Tru-Start commitment. This means it will start with one or two pulls, and if it doesn’t, they’ll fix it free of charge.

All of these best rated mowers are excellent choices. If you’re looking for a mower with high reviews and ratings, any one of these is a good choice. The one you choose will most likely depend on the type and size of yard you need to mow as well as which one fits best in your budget.
